Abstract

This research aims to provide a concise study on the importance of historical documents. Historical documents of all types, whether physical or written, constitute the fundamental material upon which the historical researcher bases their work. It is self-evident that past events are simply occurrences that have passed, and there is no way to relive, retrieve, or understand their course except through the documents they left behind—that is, historical records that contain those past events, whether written documents or archaeological remains that represent those events. It is worth noting that eras, periods, and events that have not left behind records or archaeological remains that embody them remain unknown, and there is no way to know or understand them. Based on this, historical documents are considered an important cultural treasure that cannot be ignored and must be preserved and documented to ensure the continuity of the country's history and culture. These documentary sources serve as a mirror reflecting the nation's past and its various achievements. As a result of the paramount importance of historical documents of all types, their digitization has become an essential and indispensable matter in order to safeguard them from damage. This prevents loss through more efficient, secure, and reliable methods, allowing researchers and interested parties to access and retrieve documents electronically in seconds, reliably and effectively. Furthermore, digitization reduces the physical space required to store documents, data, and various files.
