Abstract

This research examines the methodological trajectory of Hadith codification, highlighting the chronological precedence and early strategy established for recording the Prophetic Sunnah, contrary to claims suggesting that codification was delayed until the second century AH. The study aims to uncover the synthesis between the legislative authority of the Prophet (pbuh) and the systematic planning of the Ahl al-Bayt (as) in preserving the Hadith text and protecting it from loss and distortion. The study adopts a historical-analytical methodology to examine narrations and codices, structured around two main axes: The first focuses on the influence of the Prophet’s (pbuh) persona in establishing early codification through direct authorization and personal dictation of rulings and legislation to his Companions. The second axis focuses on the systematic planning of the Ahl al-Bayt (as) across three levels: foundation and compilation during the era of Imam Ali (as) through the codification of 'Al-Jami'ah', followed by consolidation and encouragement during the eras of Imams al-Baqir and al-Sadiq (as) to prompt narrators to write, leading to the expansion and organization phase that culminated in the 'Four Hundred Principles' (Al-Usul al-Arba'mi'ah). The findings demonstrate that Hadith codification was neither a byproduct of emergent historical circumstances nor a coincidence; rather, it constituted an integrated strategic project. Initiated through direct prophetic legitimacy and dictation, it was sustained by rigorous scientific development and consolidation by the Ahl al-Bayt (as), establishing the earliest codices as the primary pillar and foundational defense for preserving Islamic jurisprudence and the Sunnah across major Hadith collections.
