The Holy Quran contains verses that are clear and unambiguous (muhkam) and verses that are allegorical (mutashabih), requiring precise interpretation. Schools of Quranic exegesis differ in their understanding of these allegorical verses. The school of Ahl al-Bayt (peace be upon them) relies on interpreting the Quran with the Quran itself and the hadiths of the infallible Imams, focusing on spiritual and esoteric meanings. In contrast, the Sunni school focuses on the literal and grammatical meaning of the verses, interpreting them in accordance with Islamic law and the Prophetic Sunnah. Despite the differences in methodology, there are key points of convergence, most importantly: prioritizing the Quran, ensuring consistency between verses, and relying on the Sunnah to clarify allegorical verses. This highlights the richness and comprehensiveness of the Quran, encompassing both spiritual and legal meanings.
