Abstract

This study provides an analytical examination of the Divine Attributes as presented in Al-Amthal fi Tafsir Kitab Allah al-Munzal by Grand Ayatollah Sheikh Naser Makarem Shirazi, one of the leading contemporary Shi‘a scholars. The research focuses on how the author combines reason and revelation in explaining the Divine Attributes, maintaining a balance between transcendence (tanzīh) and affirmation (ithbāt). In Makarem Shirazi’s interpretation, the Divine Attributes are not abstract theological ideas but living realities that shape human ethics and spirituality. For instance, God’s mercy inspires compassion, and His justice guides human fairness. The study also examines his approach to anthropomorphic attributes such as “hand,” “face,” and “establishment on the Throne,” which he interprets symbolically and rationally in accordance with the teachings of Ahl al-Bayt (peace be upon them) , avoiding literalism and anthropomorphism. In conclusion, Al-Amthal presents a balanced and insightful model that unites intellect and faith, textual understanding and moral insight, offering a profound comprehension of God’s attributes grounded in both rational and spiritual foundations.
